Description: Carroll Shelby became a legend in his own lifetime with the amazing Cobra. His efforts with the Mustang and the GT40 did not hurt his legendary status. This book takes you through the entire range of Shelby cars, from the first Cobra to the 2009 Mustang Shelby GT500 Super Snake, with beautifully presented colour photographs on gloss art paper. It is a visual feast for Shelby fans with the whole story of each model told - warts and all!

Jacket Notes:

In 1962 a successful race driver named Carroll Shelby, a man with an itch to build a sports car, unleashed the Shelby Cobra on the world. The car, a petite AC sports car with a Ford V-8 engine stuffed under its hood, should have been an jnstant anachronism. Instead, the Cobra soon proved to be the hottest thing on four wheels, dominating racetracks from Laguna Seca to Le Mans. The Complete Book of Shelby Automobiles: Cobras, Mustangs, and Super Snakes details all of Shelby`s automotive creations, from the first Cobras and Mustang GT350s of the 1960s through the one-off race cars to the very latest Mustangs Shelby produces today.

Below review by author and fine artist Wallace Wyss, most recently having published SHELBY The Man The Cars The Legend.

You have to know that, someday someone would eventually write the ultimate book on Shelby. This is almost it. Entitled The Complete Book of Shelby Automobiels, Cobras, Mustangs and Super Snakes, it is by Colin Comer and published by Motorbooks of St. Paul, MN. It is a handsome hardbound "coffee table" type book with very good colour reproduction and many historical black and white pictures mixed in with modern day shots of restored Cobras and Shelbys.

Comer happens to be a dealer in real Cobras and Shelbys so knows his subject through and through. And he has a wife Cana, who is an enthusiast par excellence and who diligently hunted down pictures that haven`t been seen in other Shelby books.

The book is 256 pages, hardbound, about an inch thick and 9.62" x 11". The ISBN -13 number is 978-0-7603-3578-9 if you want to order it at the bookstore .

Comer covers the subject matter of factly, sticking pretty close to the specifications of the cars, production numbers and so forth and not spending much time on the "why did Ford want to win LeMans" or "why did Shelby tie in with Oldsmobile."

Comer accomodates the Dodge Shelbys , including the Viper, in the book with equal fervor, not discriminating against them as in some Shelby books where only the For- based cars are mentioned His view is the long view, that someday all things Shelby will be regarded as collectible, though at present there is a vast difference in price between, say, an Omni GLH and a `66 Shelby Mustang..

There is practiclaly no space given to Shelby`s driving career, his family, his marriages, or anything in the personal side, again by the author`s choice.

Comer incidentally also did a book called Million-Dollar Muscle Cars, so is regarded as a leading expert in the value of high performance American made cars.

When I said this tome is "almost" the ultimate Shelby book, I realized after reading it that, for those who want a buyer`s guide, you`ll still have to buy some other book with a Buyer`s Guide label for those microscopic shots of serial numbers stamped into parts that show you what`s original and what`s repro, which would have disturbed the flow of this book, or yet another book to get the real skinny on the behind-the-scenes jockeying with automakers that Shelby excels at.

Comer chose not to delve into the politics, mostly because it`s so difficult to know what really happened. And adding both those type of subjects would have lengthened the book another 100 pages. Not to mention there`s no blow by blow racing history of the Cobras/ Shelbys or even Vipers. Truth be told, you need maybe 3-5 books to cover all these topics.

Congratulations to the Motorbooks crew for making this book a keeper instead of a "fluff" piece which so many auto books are.
