Comments: New BMW-backed "R50" series Mini launched in the UK July 2001 and onsale in Australia from January 2002. The Cooper (R50) has a 1.6 L engine produced from a BMW/Chrysler joint venture, while Cooper S (R53) uses a supercharged version. Cooper S denoted by bonnet scoop. From early 2004 production, the MG-Rover 5 speed gearbox in the Cooper was replaced by a Getrag unit. Facelifted model range from Sept 2004 in Australia and Cabriolet (R52) launched in December 2004. In Europe there is a basic "One" version sold, a One D that uses a Toyota 1.4 L turbo diesel (as seen in the Yaris) and the Cooper S is offered with the option of a 6 speed automatic.
