Description: The unique Isle of Man TT races, run over the 37.75 miles of public roads that make up the Mountain Course, are an anachronism. Virtually everywhere else in the world, safety rules have restricted racing to sanitised artificial race tracks, but the Isle of Man remains. This book tells the story of 100 years of racing through towns and villages, up and down a mountain, over hump-back bridges and through an amazing variety of corners from flat-out sweepers to first gear hairpins. Lap speeds have risen from the original 40 mph (64 km/h) to almost 130 mph (over 200 km/h), but the solid roadside furniture and unforgiving track remain, lying in wait for a rider who makes the slightest mistake. It also looks at the machines and mechanical developments and race organisation, plus the financial rewards and commercial interests; setting them all in the context of the triumphs and tragedies of a great sporting event.
