Description: Including rare footage of the Neptune Racing Team. Norm Beechey retired just three years after Peter Brock made his Bathurst debut. But Beechey was the megastar of motor sport before that term became overused. A successful businessman who competed as the absolute professional, he was worshipped by motor race crowds. He was an entertainer, certainly with his hugely energetic style of driving, but underneath that was the coolness of a man who knew how to take each step in his glittering career. He was the first to introduce big American V8’s at a time when racing was dominated by the British Jaguars, Cortina’s and Mini’s. He was the first to win the Australian Touring Car Championship in an Australian built V8 – in this case the iconic Monaro in 1970. Beechey raced for just 17 years and his 27 different race sedans included a Ford Customline, Holden 48-215, EH Holden, Chevrolet Impala, Ford Galaxie, Ford Mustang, Chevy Nova and Chevrolet Camaro. Surprisingly while he drove in the first three Armstrong 500’s – the ancestor of today’s Great Race at Phillip Island he ran in only two at Bathurst. From today’s perspective that doesn’t match Brock’s versatile racing history.Yet his easy rapport with the fans, his charismatic nature, his enormous sense of humour and above all, his spectacular driving, belonged to Norman Edward Beechet, long before Brock. A must for all motoring and motor sport enthusiasts.
